The Magic Behind the Genie

During the development of the animated film, the character of the Genie was based on jazz greats Cab Calloway and Fats Waller. Although this concept was eventually altered for the film, it came back to life for the Broadway show.

The musical number "Friend Like Me," which features tap dancing, gold costumes, and towering set pieces, is a tribute to Busby Berkeley's classic 1933 film musical, 42nd Street.
